The Chinese government's environmental restrictions have caused the supply chain to begin to change. To improve air pollution, China urges the steel industry to cut coal use. The prices of parts for steelmaking have risen rapidly, and the performance of related Japanese companies has increased. At the same time, the prices of raw materials for semiconductor manufacturing gases have also risen, and the impact of China's environmental protection restrictions has continued to expand.

It is expected that global steel production methods will transition to electric furnace ironmaking that melts scrap iron. The Chinese government also urges domestic manufacturers to protect the environment. The demand for graphite electrodes as a heat source for electric furnaces has expanded. The graphite electrode supplier Tokai Carbon's 2019 products have all been sold, and the equipment will be upgraded to increase production capacity. Another manufacturer, Showa Denko, is also in short supply.

China's environmental restrictions have led to an increase in material prices. The price of hydrofluoric acid, a raw material for semiconductor manufacturing gases, rose rapidly in 2017. In terms of "fluorite" as a raw material for hydrofluoric acid, there are limited good producing areas with less impurities, and Chinese production is considered to account for 6 to 70% of global production. Japanese companies are highly dependent on China.

On the one hand, the global market for semiconductors using hydrofluoric acid-based gases has expanded. For demand-side semiconductor manufacturers, if the gas shortage will have an impact on semiconductor production, they have to accept price increases.
